InfacthewasamemberoftheFloriculturalSociety,BaptistChurch,DuttonParkCommitteeofManagement,InstituteCommittee,MunicipalCouncil,BrassBandandDefenceRifleClub.
However,hismaininterestwasprobablythedevelopmentofthegroundsandconservatoriesofLanarkHouse,whichoccupiednearlyfouracres.AdetailedreportinaKapundaHeraldof1886describestheconservatories,fernhouses,shadehouses,lawnsandtrees.Theconservatoriesalonecontained5,000potplants.
SIRSIDNEYKIDMAN'S"ERINGA"1897-1921
SidneyKidmanseemstohaveboughtthehouseinabout1900andre-namedit"Eringa".HeuseditashishomebaseuntilhedonatedittotheEducationDepartmentin1921.
HewasbornatAthelstonein1857onhisparents'farm.HearrivedatKapundawithhisfamedone-eyedhorsewhenonlyaladofthirteen,havingrunawayfromhome.HisfirstnightinKapundawasspentatthePrinceofWalesHotelandhejourneyedonthenextdaytomakehisfortuneinthevastandbarrenlandstothenorth.
Aidedbyalegacyofabout?400fromhisgrandfather,Kidmaneventuallybuiltupalandandstockempirethatsawhimeitherowningorleasingoveronehundredcattleandsheepstations.Thetotalareaofthestationswasinexcessof100,000squaremiles,anareagreaterthanthatoftheStateofVictoria.
Kidman'sannualhorsesalesatKapundaattractedmuchattention.TheKapundaHeraldIllustratedSupplementofSeptember2,1904recordedthat"Australia'srecordhorsesaleconductedonaccountofoneowner"hadopenedatKapunda.MessrsColesandThomashadsubmittedthefirstofthebatchof1,300horsesonaccountofMrSidneyKidman,ofKapunda.MrC.J.Coleswieldedthehammer.
SirSidneydiedinAdelaidein1935.

KapundaHighSchoolhasexistedsince1907asanadditionalsectionofthePrimarySchoolwithitsownteachingstaff.ThetransfertothenewbuildingwascompletedwhenSidneyKidmanofficiallyopenedthenewpremiseson12October1922.
Theexteriorofthebuildinghasnotchangedmuchovertheyears.Internallyhowever,roomshavebeenfrequentlychangedtofitschooluse.Themostrecentchangeshaveinvolvedthefoyerwhichhasseentheadditionofareceptiondesk,displaycabinetanddoorway,aswellascarpet.Thechangesareinsympathywiththeexistingwoodwork.
Theoriginalfunctionofmanyroomscanstillbedetected.....thePrincipal'sOffice,theButler'sPantryretainsitsimpressivecupboards.ThewhitetilesofLadyKidman'sbathroomstilldominatetheLibraryOffice.Elsewhere,thecommandingfireplaces,ceilings,stainedglass,castironlaceandmarblestepsremainaslastingmonumentstothetimesofGreenshieldsandKidman.
KapundaHighSchoolisarelativelysmallcountryHighSchoolwithacurrentenrolmentofaround400. Wearegeographicallylocated80kilometresnortheastoftheAdelaideGPObetweentheBarossaandClareValleysinthetownofKapunda,Australia'soldestminingtown.WeareamongsttheoldestsecondaryschoolsinruralSouthAustraliaandcelebratedourcentenaryin2007.
